Our startup began with a simple concept; technical recruiters should actually be technical. With that in mind, Joanne Burt and Adrian Russo launched Equip Solutions Group as a technical staffing agency "for technologists, by technologists." We cultivated a small team of carefully selected and seasoned recruiters who have actual technical experience. ESG's goal was to have recruiters who are technical, not technologists who are recruiters.
Equip Solutions Group officially opened their doors in March of 2016. Our clients were a diverse group and came from the private sector, associations, non-profits and government contractors. One thing we learned very quickly was all of our recruiting tools seemingly produced the same candidates. Why? It's simple; if you keep searching in the same places you will not find anything new. This gave us a radical idea for candidate sourcing. Let's have existing sourcing methods as an exclusion criteria so we are guaranteed to obtain different results.
We want our new recruiting solution to find talent everywhere but the traditional resources. What did that mean for RecruitLocator? That meant a missive set of exclusion criteria. Sources like CareerBuilder, Monster, Indeed and resume databases were out. So where do we look? Where can we find talent that no one else can identify? We want something like a boolean search but much more sophisticated and at a higher level - something that a well-trained recruiter could not do on their own. A tool that far surpasses existing solutions that automate a search string, parse keywords into a pop-out search engine or one that searches and caches ordinary web results. In plain language, we wanted a bad ass sourcing machine that no one else had and we wanted it all to ourselves.
Disrupt Brooklyn was our first "real" exposure in the tech community. We had an alpha release of RecruitLocator and wanted to see our competition. This event helped to shape future features and iterations of RecruitLocator.
We took RecruitLocator from localhost to our intranet site for the first time! During this period we added a GitHub search component, increased results by 4x and refined our curation techniques. Our solution takes shape and starts to look like our current product.
London bound! Adrian Russo filmed the Art of Recruiting at the Painted Castle in London, England. This chapter featured the best recruiters from North America and Europe as well as C-Suite Executives at Monster, CareerBuilder, Hired and Recruiter.com. Truly an honor and great learning experience.
Arguably the most exciting, yet nerve wrenching part of our journey. Disrupt SF marked the first big test for RecruitLocator; this is the first time we demo and exhibited our solution for a large-scale tech audience. Roughly 300 tech start-ups from all over the world flock to Pier 49 to display the latest technology in their respective fields. It was a great way to gain exposure and even more fun playing with cool tech for three days!
